Welcome
Spinther is a practice for analytical therapy, which is a type of psychotherapy based on the work of Carl Gustav Jung, who was one of the founding fathers of modern psychology.
The method revolves around making unconscious emotions and behaviour conscious so can live with more awareness of yourself and more emotional freedom.
The subconscious is where (day)dreams and fantasies come from and sometimes those awkward Freudian slips. It’s also the place where we lock away all of the stuff we don’t want to know about ourselves. Those can be parts of our personality that we don’t like, but also good characteristics that can be a source of strength and inspiration.
The big difference with many other methods of therapy is that analytical therapy effectuates changes in your subconscious. That’s why it’s sometimes also called ‘depth psychology’. The advantage of this is that we fix the problem at the roots, not the branches, so the improvements you achieve are permanent.
Why Therapy?
Sometimes you feel stuck, sometimes fear and anxiety get in the way. Sometimes you feel bored or listless or people just annoy the hell out of you, but maybe a little more than necessary... You might feel that there should be more to life or you want to get more out of yourself, live with more creativity and vitality. You might also just be curious about how your mind works, and where your motivations come from.
Sessions
Practically speaking the analysis consists of a series of conversations of about 45 minutes between two people. Sessions are usually planned two weeks apart, although this can vary depending on the client. Every therapy is made to fit to the unique needs of your personal situation.
You can consider the therapy as a creative process, a journey of exploration in which you discover new parts of your personality and get to know them better and better. The goal of the sessions is to take away the barriers that precent you from shaping your life in a confident, positive manner. This is done by bringing ideas and emotions from your subconscious into your conscious awareness so that eventually, your behaviour and actions fit increasingly well with who you are at your core.
The Therapist
Christiaan Maats was educated as an analytical therapist at the Jung Academie Nederland in Amsterdam, under guidance of Eefke van der Drift and Arno Roelofs. He has a background is in product design and academic education. By doing the Jung Academie he wanted to better understand how archetypes and symbols communicate and in the process discovered the joys of giving therapy. Because of his combined experience as a creative entrepreneur and analytical therapist, he helps with both personal issues as well as entrepreneurial challenges.
Experiences with Spinther
“This therapy, and the subtle empathetic way in which Christiaan guided me, gave me truly novel insights into my own character. How my thoughts work and how I might spin those thoughts around. It’s really a quite playful, almost intuitive kind of therapy. Images play an important roll, which was something I found very interesting. After a session all the images that surfaced could keep me preoccupied for a long time, making me more aware about the workings of my mind, my actions and about the relationships with the people around me." - Anonymous
“When I first started the therapy there was a lot of restlessness inside of me and I had a tense relationship with my parents. The conversations and visualizations were an important reason why I feel more at ease now. I can deal with my parents in a different, more enjoyable way and guard my boundaries better, sometimes even in a light manner. I always felt at ease with and safe with Christiaan because of his calm demeanour and pleasant voice. He gives you great feedback and is well-spoken in a creative way. I’ve learned new words from him, like ’felt knowledge'. This creative use of language is something that really appeals to me" - Anonymous
